Q&A: Do we need to pay sales tax on fundraisers?
Question by Mr. W: Do we require to spend sales tax on fundraisers?
We are raising funds for college students to go to Washington D.C. on a class trip. The school that helped promote it now says that this specific trip and fund raiser are not tax exempt and we cannot use their tax range. The vendor of the candle fund raiser mentioned that this is not genuine. We are in Kansas, who is right.

Speak to your state sales tax people for the final word. Right here in my state, California, candy is not subject to sales tax at all.

I think that these sales should be subject to sales tax.
The candle company is actually selling the candles through the school’s students. The candle company will then give the school their portion of the profits made from the fundraiser. The school is not selling the candles.
Even if the school was selling the candles, the school only gets an exemption for items that are purchased, not sold.
