DON-8r is a robot designed to raise money for charities through encouraging playful interaction with the people it meets. It has been developed by Tim Pryde, a 21 year old Product Design student soon to graduate from The University of Dundee. DON-8r travels about public environments, following random paths, requiring donations of coins (and the occasional helpful push) from passers-by in order to keep it moving. When stationary DON-8r calls for assistance grabbing the attention of those who would usually dismiss charity support. Always polite, DON-8r will thank each donation, whatever the amount, and begin moving again for a set length of time until it requires another donation. While not being a replacement for charity workers, DON-8r provides a platform for charities to promote their cause in a public environment and in a manner which encourages curiosity and playfulness. It is a device which emphasizes the good nature of people and their willingness to support. This is currently the only model, having been almost entirely hand built, however the project has scope for development through machine manufacture of each unit.
